Chemical and Mechanical Weathering
Chemical Weathering:
-Process by which rocks are decomposed/dissolved/loosened by a chemical process
-Takes place in almost all types of rocks (especially small ones)
-Chemical reactions break down the bonds which holds the rock formation together, causing it to fall apart.
-Common in places with a lot of storms or water.
-Reacts with water, gases, and solutions (such as acidic)
Mechanical Weathering:
-Process by which rocks are decomposed/dissolved/loosened due to physical disintegration (abrasion)
-Usually torn apart by a physical force (pressure, earth's crust moving slowly, temperature)
-Most common type is constant freezing
How they're the same:
-Weathering is the decomposition of rocks, soils and their minerals.
-They do the same thing, just different processes in doing so.
